PERFORMING

I have been performing on trumpet and conducting for over 45 years.

Along with a well rounded music education and background in different styles of trumpet performance over the course of 46 years, I have conducted dozens of honor bands, adjudicated thousands of bands at festivals and given hundreds of clinics to junior high through college aged students, bringing a broad and deep range of experience to clients.

Even though I have recently retired from professional trumpet playing in 2020 and university teaching in 2022, I am still very active in the music world. Recently, I have been arranging for Large Brass Ensemble

(Instrumentation: 64312+percussion, piano, or whatever is necessary for the arrangement), and have enjoyed it immensely. These 70+ arrangements should be available for publication soon.

Background in Performance

I started taking trumpet lessons when I was 10 years old and started performing as a senior in high school, which carried through college, graduate school, and into a professional career. My trumpet teachers included Frank Maltz (Studio player in Huntington Beach, CA), Gary Wiedeman (Music Educatior in Garden Grove, CA), Joan LaRue (Trumpet educator/performer in Long Beach, CA), Vincent Chicowitz (Chicago Symphony, Masterclass performer), Anthony Plog (World famous trumpet recitalist and composer, now residing in Freiburg, Germany), Boyde Hood (Section Trumpet in the Los Angeles Philharmonic), Barbara Butler and Charlie Geyer (Trumpet duo extraordinaire, Chicago, IL, Rochester, NY, and Houston, TX).

I have earned 2 degrees in Trumpet Performance; a Bachelor of Music from the University of Southern California, and a Master of Music in Trumpet and Literature from the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester, NY. I was the Graduate Assistant for 2 years at Eastman and was awarded the coveted Performer’s Certificate for outstanding Trumpet Performance.

Trumpet is my main instrument, which includes Bb, C, D/Eb, Flugelhorn, Cornet, Bb/A Piccolo Trumpet, and Fanfare Trumpet (I can play Slide Trumpet too, but very poorly!)  I am mainly a classically trained/lead trumpet player, however I am capable of  playing numerous different styles from Orchestral to Jazz Ensemble.

As a recitalist or member of an ensemble, I have performed (trumpet and/or conducted) in 31 countries all over the world: Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Bermuda, Canada, China, Denmark, East Germany, England, Fiji, Germany, Holland, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, North Korea, Norway, Philippines, Romania, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United States, and Yugoslavia (now Croatia).
